Legendary musician Sérgio Mendes who worked with Black Eyed Peas dies aged 83

Musician Sérgio Mendes has sadly died at the age of 83.

The music star had a career which spanned almost 60 years. During that time, he worked with jazz greats including Herb Alpert and Cannonball Adderley.

And he may be best known to the younger generation for his 2006 collaboration with the Black Eyed Peas. They performed on a re-recorded version of his song Mas Que Nada.

Sérgio’s cause of death has not yet been released, according to TMZ. And he is survived by his Brazilian singer wife Gracinha Leporace, and his five children.

The musician’s career kicked off with the group Brasil ’66. Their first album, Herp Albert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66, went platinum, thanks to the success of the single Mas Que Nada, which was a cover of the Jorge Ben song.

The line-up of the group often changed, though. And Sergio achieved major success when he performed the song The Look Of Love at the 1968 Oscars, where it was also nominated for an award.

In the late 1960s, it’s fair to say Sergio was the biggest Brazilian artist worldwide. He even performed at the White House and in Japan.

He achieved some success in the UK too with the 2006 re-recording of Mas Que Nada, which also featured vocals from his wife. The Black Eyed Peas version also sampled their hit song Hey Mama.

It entered the UK Singles Chart at No29 before peaking at No6 the next week.

It wasn’t just chart success that Sergio achieved, though. He won a Grammy in 1992 and two Latin Grammys in 2005 and 2010.
