Netflix is gearing up for the release of its new thriller, Carry-On, and fans are already hailing it as ‘the next Die Hard’. The deal that set this in motion was struck back in 2021 when Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners agreed to produce a slate of films for the streaming giant, with Carry-On penned by T. J. Fixman as the inaugural project.
The film, which racked up a cool $47million in production costs according to Fastlane, centres on Ethan Kopek, a young TSA agent who finds himself coerced by a traveller into smuggling a perilous package through security on a Christmas Day flight, reports the Express.
Director Jaume Collet-Serra, known for his mastery of thrillers, shared with Tudum: “Contained environments force us to get to know the movie’s characters very quickly and personally – we’re immediately in the thick of the story with them, which creates a genuine investment in what’s happening on-screen.”
He added: “It’s also a very exciting visual challenge as a filmmaker to come up with creative ways to shoot every inch of a small space and try to make it look different and find new details of the world in each scene.”
When is the release date for Carry-On?
Expected to be a festive favourite like Die Hard, Carry-On will land on Netflix on December 13.
US viewers can tune in from midnight, while UK audiences will have to wait until 8am for the film to be available.
Collet-Serra expressed his hope that Carry-On will be a film that audiences can enjoy throughout the year, but acknowledged: “Of course, the holiday travel theme is integral to our story, and we definitely had fun with it in terms of Christmas decorations in the airport and some classic holiday tunes in the soundtrack.”
