New Little Mermaid horror infects classic Disney tale with blood-thirsty twist

A new Disney inspired horror film is being released.

A trailer for The Little Mermaid was recently posted on YouTube, showing a gruesome retelling of the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale that Disney popularised with their iconic 1989 cartoon.

The video shows a terrifying mermaid with razor sharp teeth who preys on victims out at sea and the description reads: “Beauty is both deceiving and dangerous in this darkly fascinating twist on [the] classic tale.”

“After archeologist Dr. Eric Prince and his students uncover an ancient pagan temple in the depths of the Caribbean, Eric falls for a mysterious woman who resembles a mermaid he and his team encountered at sea. As their relationship intensifies, she leads Eric deeper into her evil underwater world until he must choose between true love and the destruction of all humanity.”

The Little Mermaid stars Mike Markoff, Jeff Denton, Samuel Selman, Sean-Michael Argo, Winston Crooke, Steven Yniguez, Manon Laurent, and Lydia Helen.

Down in the comment section, film fans were divided over the Disney inspired trailer and couldn’t resist sharing their thoughts. One person joked: ““Mom, I want to watch to The Little Mermaid”, parent accidentally plays this version…”

Disney also released a film of the same name back in 1989

Another added: “Isn’t this actually closer to the original story?” while a third hopeful said: “Can’t wait to see! Lydia Helen is such an emerging talent – definitely one to watch out for.” Someone else defended the new horror and wrote: “I mean this is how Mermaids were always depicted to be. They aren’t meant to be friendly and Disney had people fooled lol.”

However, others were not impressed after watching the clip and slammed entertainment company Lionsgate for being part of the project: “Lionsgate… what are we even doing here? Are you trying to collapse your studio? [shrugging emoji].”

Someone else savagely joked: “We’ll be finding this in the $5 DVD bin in Walmart very soon,” while another quipped: “Oh how Lionsgate has fallen.” Film fans also gushed over “excellent” actress Lydia Helen, who has encouraged those who “don’t like horror” to watch The Little Mermaid “just for her”.

“Finally! A horror with mermaids! The lead actress is gorgeous,” chimed in another smitten cinemagoer.
