One Foot in the Grave fans still beg its creator to bring back the show – even though he killed off main character Victor Meldrew.
Writer David Renwick was the brains behind the classic British sitcom, starring Richard Wilson as grumpy Victor and Annette Crosbie as his long-suffering wife Margaret. The series ran from 1990 to 2000 and, in the finale, viewers were shocked when Victor was killed by a drunk driver.

The 72-year-old explained Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s What’s Funny About… show why he made the shocking move to do away with Victor, much to the dismay of bosses. He added: “I think it was partly just to draw a line under it.
“Also, I thought it was different. I couldn’t remember another principal character in a sitcom ever having died at the end.”
Renwick also shared that the Beeb were desperate for him to keep the hit on the air. He said: “[Former creative director] Alan Yentob wanted more. Then Peter Salmon, I think, took over and tried to persuade me to do One Foot… in the millennium to round it off.”

Renwick considered Les Dawson for the job, but Wilson changed his mind and accepted the part. Although the sitcom was controversial at times, it bagged itself several awards, including the BAFTA for Best Comedy in 1982.
