Only Fools and Horses buffs have finally cracked an iconic gag from the legendary sitcom that had them baffled for decades.
On Reddit, a thread invited fans to spill the beans on “jokes or storylines you didn’t get”, sparking a right old chinwag. One puzzled punter wanted the lowdown on a wisecrack from the very first episode, where Trig flogs nicked briefcases to Del Boy and Rodney.
The fan was scratching their head over Del’s quip about Trig being “an executive hod carrier”. A savvy viewer jumped in with the 411, pointing out that a “hod” is what builders use to lug bricks around, making Del’s remark a cheeky dig at Trig’s get-up.

The banter didn’t stop there, as other users piped up with Only Fools zingers they’d only just twigged. One fan had the crowd howling after misreading an Albert one-liner as a jibe at Rodney’s skimpy CV.
The fan posted: “‘There’s no heavy lifting involved’ – Albert in Frog’s Legacy. Reckoned he was ribbing Rodney for his pretty sparse work record?” But another die-hard set the record straight: “No, it’s a joke about Rodney talking about his work experience.”
The explanation was given with a bit of a giggle, revealing that Albert had hilariously mixed up “curriculum vitae” with some medical lingo, leading to the tickled reply: “‘Curriculum vitae’, which Albert mistakes as a Latin name for a back injury or a part of your spine e.g. cervical vertebrae,” and the original poster was chuffed: “Oh is it? That’s rather clever.”
Another gem from Del Boy raised eyebrows when someone asked about the line: “‘There was dad. He would’ve loved a job, except he suffered from a sticky mattress,” which left the inquirer confessing they were “almost too afraid to ask what it meant”.
But the conundrum was quickly solved by savvy Reddit users who clarified it simply meant “he was lazy” and “wouldn’t get out of bed”, sending everyone into fits of laughter.
Only Fools and Horses ran from September 1981 until 25 December 2003 and ran across seven series on BBC1.
