P Diddy’s baffling amount of name changes may be hiding a more sinister secret.
In an exclusive interview with Daily Star, celebrity PR specialist Kayley Cornelius broke down the reasons behind Sean Combs’ unusual decision to change his name a whopping seven times throughout his career.
She explained: “P Diddy’s decision to rebrand multiple times wasn’t just about fitting into the rap culture of catchy nicknames; it appears to be a carefully calculated move, likely going against the advice of any PR team or record label.”

Kayley explained that many celebrities carefully work to “build and maintain a strong brand,” which is “essential” to their public image as it helps to “drive opportunities, shape public perception and enhance their work.” However, Diddy decided to do the opposite and the wild career move to “constantly switch up his identity” appears to be “more of a personal choice than a business choice”.
She continued: “Once a star establishes their name, it becomes harder to shift or escape it. In P Diddy’s case, frequent rebranding might have been a way to blur the lines, making it tougher for the public to keep up.”
“Using more generic names like Love or Swag dilutes the uniqueness of his brand, complicating efforts to trace him digitally, especially given how briefly his name changes have lasted. These names get buried in the vastness of the internet, making any evidence or association harder to track down. Interestingly, though, when it comes to promoting his music, P Diddy always returns to his core brand, suggesting he knows when to leverage his strongest asset.”
Sean Combs’ first stage name was Puffy, later switching to Puff Daddy as his career progressed. After a suggestion from Biggie Smalls, he changed his name to P Diddy.
Combs decided to drop the P and went by just Diddy for a while, later renaming himself again. This time he chose Love and Brother Love back in 2022.
Diddy also changed his name to Swag for one week back in 2011. The rapper was arrested on 16 September and charged with sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution, all of which he “categorically denies”.
