Shirley tagged fellow Strictly celebrity Amy Dowden at the end of her post. Amy herself has courageously spoken about her own struggle with cancer, in addition to acknowledging Macmillan Cancer Support.
Swiftly after Shirley gave her health update, her followers filled up the comments section on Instagram, sharing their relief. They also applauded the dancer for being so transparent about her health journey, believing it encourages others to do likewise.
One happy fan commented: “Wonderful news Shirley. Today marks 10 years cancer-free for me. I’m beyond happy and feeling blessed.”
While another said: “That’s great news Shirley, wishing well for the future. Take care x.”
The head judge recently opened up about her health scare, revealing that fellow dancer Amy Dowden’s situation prompted her to get checked. She previously posted a snap wrapped in bandages, sharing with fans: “Urging all women do not miss your mammogram. I went for mine, ended up going for a second one and a biopsy. Local anesthetic biopsy done. Now waiting for results.”
She continued: “Amy Dowden you ran through my mind. The importance of not putting it off.
“Go and get tested. Plus self breast check regularly.”
Amy showed her support by commenting: “Always here for you! Important message here all from @shirleyballas.”
Shirley, who has seen cancer affect several family members, felt worried when doctors found something unusual following her check-up, leading to a biopsy after a 3D mammogram. While awaiting her biopsy results, Shirley confessed to The Sun on Sunday how daunting the experience was.
She said: “It’s been terrifying, to have the needle go in your body to numb it before the biopsy. Every time the phone rings, I think, ‘Oh, maybe they are my results.'”
Shirley recently praised the monarchy for their openness about their cancer battles. Naming King Charles and Princess Kate as “inspiring”, she shared her own experience with illness, describing the royals’ courage to divulge their struggles as “very brave”.
