Police described the scene where double Oscar winning actor Gene Hackman was found dead with his musician wife Betsy Arakawa and their pet dog in their home in Santa Fe
The sudden death of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa has left many puzzled after they were reportedly found partially mummified at their mansion.
The legendary Hollywood actor, 95, was found dead at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Wednesday (February 26) with his musician wife Betsy Arakawa, 63, and one of their dogs.
Police said they suspected no signs of foul play and a cause of death has not been confirmed but an investigation is ongoing.
Officers who were on the scene reported: “The death of the two deceased individuals to be suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation because the reporting party found the front door of the residence unsecured and opened.”
The officers continued: “Deputies observed a healthy dog running loose on the property, another healthy dog near the deceased female, a deceased dog laying 10-15 feet from the deceased female in a closet of the bathroom, the heater being moved, the pill bottle being opened and pills scattered next to the female.
“The male decedent being located in a separate room of the residence, and no obvious signs of a gas leak.”
Arakawa was discoverd on her side in the ground floor bathroom with a space heater near her head. It is believed that the heater toppled off the counter if she fell suddenly. Hackman was found in a different room, and detectives believe he may have fallen as his glasses were flung from his body.
A distressing 911 call has been released to the public, which begins with a maintenance worker (whose name is withheld) claiming to have discovered one or two dead bodies.
While the dispatcher calls for paramedics, the caller is heard repeatedly muttering “Damn” and sniffling back tears.
