This Is Spinal Tap star David Kaff, who played keyboardist Viv Savage in the iconic mockumentary, has died at the age of 79, his band Mutual of Alameda’s Wild Kingdom has announced

Spinal Tap keyboardist David Kaff has died aged 79

Keyboardist David Kaff, known for his role in Spinal Tap, has sadly passed away at the age of 79.

His band, Mutual of Alameda’s Wild Kingdom, shared the devastating news on Friday. They penned: “Our brother David Kaffinetti passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday. We are devastated by this event.”

David played the character of keyboardist Viv Savage in the 1984 mockumentary comedy film, This Is Spinal Tap. The critically-lauded film starred and was co-written by Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer.

The trio portrayed a fictional heavy metal band named Spinal Tap, dubbed as “one of England’s loudest bands”.

Director Rob Reiner took on the role of Martin “Marty” Di Bergi, a documentary filmmaker who trails them on their American tour. Meanwhile, keyboardist Dave was cast as Viv Savage for the fictional band, reports the Mirror.

Post-film release, the group carried on as a band, even making concert and live telly appearances. Still playing Savage, David participated in Spinal Tap’s appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1984.

However, by the close of that year, he exited the group and didn’t partake in any further Spinal Tap endeavours. In the 70s, David was part of Rare Bird. The band produced five studio albums.

Their track Sympathy sold roughly one million copies globally. The star later worked as a session musician with Chuck Berry for The London Chuck Berry Sessions in 1972.
