Actress Demi Moore’s reaction to missing out on her first-ever Best Actress award at the 2025 Oscars was a simple yet blunt four-word response.

Viewers were left gobsmacked when Anora star Mikey Madison scooped the prize, despite Moore bagging the Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award, and SAG Award for her performance in The Substance. Madison, 25, was visibly taken aback upon hearing her name announced and delivered her acceptance speech through tears, stating: “This is very surreal. I grew up in Los Angeles, but Hollywood always felt so far away from me, so to be here, standing in this room today is really incredible.”

She continued: “I just want to recognise and honour the sex worker community,” adding: “Yes. I will continue to support and be an ally. All of the incredible people, the women that I’ve had the privilege of meeting from that community has been one of the highlights of this incredible experience.”

However, eagle-eyed fans spotted Moore’s reaction to her loss when cameras focused on her in the audience. Lip reader Nicola Hickling has now revealed to the Daily Mail what Moore said: “Demi says ‘nice’ but she isn’t smiling when she says it. Her body is almost nodding like she had to force herself to say it.”

Moore was up against Madison, Fernanda Torres, Karla Sofia Gascon, and Cynthia Erivo and while some viewers were thrilled for Madison, many of Moore’s fans were disgruntled that she lost, venting their frustration on X, formerly Twitter, reports the Express US.

One fan posted: “Love Mikey… BUT DEMI MOORE WAS F****** ROBBED.

“Demi Moore was absolutely snubbed and you’ll NEVER change my mind. The Oscars just proved square and fair they don’t take older women seriously and they don’t take Horror seriously. I am f****** floored,” one fan vented.

Another expressed their disappointment, stating: “Demi Moore was f****** robbed! !” A third fan showed support, saying: “Well, I’m a little sad for Demi Moore since for me her interpretation was deeper and her talent will continue to be recognised and I’m very proud of her even if today she didn’t win the Oscar.

“Demi Moore deserved better,” another chimed in. A final disappointed fan lamented: “I’m so sad for DEMI MOORE! She deserved it a lot. If it was up to me. My Demi would have received her.”

Interestingly, the plot of The Substance revolves around an older woman shunned by the industry due to her age. Despite this, Moore has seen a resurgence in her career after over 40 years in Hollywood.

On X, one fan pointed out: “Demi Moore starred in a movie about how Hollywood treats older actresses and she just lost to a younger actress… The Substance has never been more relevant.”

Another commented: “Is Demi Moore losing the Oscar to a young new starlet who also exposed her body in the film not an almost exact parallel to what The Substance is all about?” And a third added: “As a The Substance warrior the irony of 62-year-old Demi Moore – who has had a storied career in the industry – losing to a 25-year-old up-and-comer is not lost on me. Hurts so bad.”

Anora later scooped the Best Picture award, along with Best Original Screenplay, Achievement in Film Editing, and the much sought-after Best Director.
