Police are still looking into the deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa because cops are waiting to see the couple’s mobile phone records
Authorities have said they are keeping the investigation in Gene Hackman and his wife’s death open until all loopholes have been closed.
Hackman, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found dead in their homes on February 26. Since then, investigations have been carried out their in $3.8 million Santa Fe, New Mexico home. They were found along with their dog, who had also passed away. Since then, it was revealed that Betsy died first from a medical issue. Hackman, who had advanced Alzheimer’s, relied on his wife’s care to survive.
According to readings on Hackman’s pacemaker, it is believed that he died around February 18, while Betsy, who died of a severe respiratory illness transmitted through rodent excrement named hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, is believed to have died around February 11 judging by the final time she was spotted on surveillance footage.
Both of their deaths are now being treated as natural, with no external or internal trauma. However, investigators are still looking into the case as they believe there to be too many unanswered questions.
The local police force who have been leading the case said they are waiting to see the couple’s mobile phone records, as well as the results of a necropsy, or autopsy, that is set to be conducted on their deceased dog.
“We consider this an open investigation until we close the loopholes of the cell phone, until we finish out the necropsy results of the canine and the other loose ends that we need to tie up,” Sheriff Mendoza said during a press conference Friday.
“But, you know, I think we’re pretty close to the timeline and with the information that Dr. Jarrell provided,” he added.
Strangely, a search warrant obtained by Fox New Digital showed that two cellphones were listed as missing items from their home. Despite the investigation, Mendoza added that he believes the chances of them uncovering new information was “unlikely.”
“I don’t know if he used cell phones or technology or emails, there’s no indication of that. So right now there is no activity from Mr. Hackman,” the Sheriff added.
Someone asked whether there could be messages about Arakawa feeling unwell before her death. Mendoza responded: “Again, we’re going through some of the communications, and I think the cellphones may have some indications of that prior to the 11th.
“But as of this moment, I don’t have any information that she was indicating that she was feeling ill during any communication.”
