Good Morning Britain was hit with breaking news on Friday morning as Kate Garraway and Adil Ray issued a warning
Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway kicked off Friday’s show with some pressing breaking news, alerting ITV viewers that Heathrow Airport will be closed until midnight.
She broke the news: “It’s just gone six o’clock. Goodness me, breaking news this morning. Britain’s busiest airport, Heathrow, has been shut down and will stay closed until midnight.
“Passengers are being advised not to travel to the airport under any circumstances, with over 1,000 flights disrupted. It’s all the terminals at Heathrow.”
The sudden closure comes after a fire at a nearby electrical substation causing a “significant power outage.”
Adil Ray, Kate’s co-host, added: “It’s also knocked out electricity to more than 16,000 homes in West London.”

The programme then switched to correspondent Nick Dixon, who was reporting live from Heathrow. As Adil highlighted the knock-on effect this closure would have throughout the weekend, he mentioned a large number of travelers due to it being the end of the week, according to the Manchester Evening News.
He remarked: “A little weekend break, maybe going to see family, emergency personal stuff, business people.
“This is going to affect so many people up and down the country and, of course, all the people who might be coming through Heathrow from elsewhere and moving on from other destinations.”
Reporting live from the airport chaos, Nick gave Adil and Kate the lowdown on the terminal shutdown. He said: “I’m seeing people hovering around the perimeter of terminal three here, unsure of what to do.”
Nick then told viewers that passengers are scrambling to get any information they can from their airlines about other options.
With the road behind him blocked off and dotted with traffic cones and officials, he commented: “I’ve never seen anything seen anything like this here before. But, it’s safety first.”
Footage of the airport plunged into total darkness due to the power failure was shown. Nick continued: “I was talking to a couple of passengers who arrived here just in the last hour or so just before we went on air, in a bit of a state.
“They’ve just arrived, they’ve driven hundreds of miles and have no idea what they’re going to do next.”
The official Twitter statement from Heathrow Airport reads: “Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage.
“To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23h59 on 21 March. Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information. We apologise for the inconvenience.”
Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV from 6am.
