Handmaid’s Tale sequel series cast announced as production set to start in days

Streaming service Hulu has confirmed that production is due to start on new series The Testaments, which is a follow up to Elisabeth Moss’ hit show The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale fans will get to see more from Gilead, with a sequel series confirmed.

The original show starring Elisabeth Moss, which was based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel, has been a huge hit but is set to wrap later this year with its sixth and final series. However, fans now have something else to look forward to, with Hulu announcing that the follow-up is coming.

The new series is The Testaments, which is based on author Atwood’s 2019 book. It is set 15 years after The Handmaid’s Tale, with new women struggling with a regime in which they are forced to bear children for those in authority.

Fans may not have too long to wait either as the show is already moving ahead. Hulu has confirmed that production is due to start on April 7, sharing a snap of a table read that sent fans into a meltdown.

The streaming service posted on Instagram: “It’s official! The Testaments, based on Margaret Atwood’s sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, starts production April 7. Ann Dowd will reprise her role as Aunt Lydia with Elisabeth Moss as an executive producer of the series.”

As well as new stories from the world of Gilead, it will bring with it new stars. The cast list currently includes actors such as Chase Infiniti, Lucy Halliday, Brad Alexander, Zarrin Darnell-Martin and Eva Foote. Mabel Li is also joining the cast, along with Amy Seimetz and Isolde Ardies.

Fans were thrilled to hear that there would be another chapter in the story and several responded by posting “Praise be” on social media, in a nod to a phrase used in the series. “BEST NEWS OF THE YEAR,” one fan exclaimed on Instagram.

“I can’t wait to see the series of the Testaments, book two of The Handmaid’s Tale, it will be different, it will be amazing, good luck to all involved,” said another. “I’m so excited!!!” said somebody else, as other viewers said they couldn’t wait.

“Amazing!!! So excited to watch,” posted one fan. “Omg this is so awesome!!!!” said somebody else. “I read both books and the show was totally different but I love The Handmaid’s Tale series so much. Can’t wait to see this spin off.”

“I’M FOAMING AT THE MOUTH,” joked one fan. Another remarked: “YES!!! I cannot wait to see Ann Dowd absolutely slay in this.”

Many fans said they had been waiting for the news to be official. “OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG,” one excited viewer exclaimed.

The TV version of The Handmaid’s Tale started in 2017 and it quickly became a massive hit. The sixth instalment drops this month, and is has already been confirmed that it will be the last.
