Murder on the Dancefloor singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor has been happily married to The Feeling star Richard Jones for almost 20 years and the pair have five boys together
Sophie Ellis-Bextor has plenty to celebrate, with her birthday today and her 20th wedding anniversary just around the corner.
The Murder on the Dancefloor singer, 46, met The Feeling bassist Richard Jones in 2002 and they went on to start dating. In June they will mark 20 years since they tied the knot.
From their sizzling chemistry to having five sons together and supporting each other’s flourishing music careers, Sophie and Richard’s marriage is one of the steadiest in showbiz. As the stunning star nears the two decade milestone with her hubby, we have a look inside their relationship.
‘Incredible’ chemistry
The couple met in 2002 when they both in their early 20s, when Sophie was auditioning musicians for her band. In 2013, Richard told The Guardian that he was immediately struck by the singer, whose first words to him were: “Nice amp.”
He got the job and they ended up on tour together, where their friendship blossomed. “But things were complicated,” the bass player said.
“We weren’t single, for a start. We weren’t even considering it. And then something kind of smacked us in the face. The chemistry was incredible – it was like nothing I’ve ever experienced.”
Marriage and baby
The pair ended up dating and Sophie discovered she was pregnant just six weeks later. “Our relationship was dramatic early on,” the singer told The Guardian.
In 2004 they welcomed their son, Sonny, then they went on to exchange vows the following year. “Richard is a good man,” Sophie told The Guardian.
“You don’t get many really good men. He can be funny and we love dancing and all the fun stuff, but the glue is that he’s kind and thoughtful.” “He’s made me a lot kinder,” she added.
Family of seven
Sophie and Richard expanded their brood after having Sonny and now have four more boys – Kit, 15, Ray, 12, Jesse, eight, and Mickey, five. Their busy home means the pair are now juggling family life with their careers.
“Five of anything is a lot,” the singer said on This Morning in 2023. “I love the chaos of big family life luckily. There are always things happening.”
Strictly took a toll
Sophie was a contestant on Strictly in 2013, coming fourth with her pro partner Brendan Cole. She later revealed in her book Spinning Plates that competing on the show was so full on that it had an impact on her and Richard.
“Some of the show was pure joy and exhilaration,” she said. “But some of it was seriously intense and, even for a strong marriage like we have, it gave our foundations a good old shake.”
