Netflix viewers have admitted they “feel old” after a discussion about emojis on new drama Adolescence.

The harrowing drama starring Stephen Graham and Ashley Walters tells the story of 13-year-old Jamie Miller (played by rising star Owen Cooper), who is arrested for stabbing a classmate to death. As police investigate the crime and try to establish a motive, they discover that seemingly innocent emojis that teens use in messages can have much darker intent.

The use of emojis comes up as DI Luke Bascombe (Ashley Walters) chats to his son Adam (Amari Bacchus), who is a classmate of both Jamie and the girl who has been murdered.

He explains that emojis that have been used on social media posts may not be what they seem, telling his puzzled dad: “The red pill is like ‘I see the truth.’ It’s a call to action by the manosphere.”

He continues: “She’s saying he’s an incel, dad… She’s saying he always will be. That’s why they say you’re an incel, they’re going to be a virgin forever.”

He also explains that hearts in different colours have different meanings.

“Red means love, purple horny, yellow ‘I’m interested, are you interested?’, pink ‘I’m interested but not in sex’, orange ‘you’re going to be fine’, it all has a meaning dad,” he said. “Everything has a meaning.”

Many viewers who have tuned in to the tense drama have posted messages on social media saying they had no idea that the emojis had other meanings. Several said it made them “feel old”.

One person posted on X: “One thing I’ve noticed after watching Stephen Graham, Adolescence is I’m so behind the times! I never knew any behind the scene meanings of emojis amongst the younger generations. Think I’ll just use my 5-6 regulars.”

“I know I’m getting old because the heart emojis meaning?” commented someone else. Another person posted: “Just watched all 4 episodes of Adolescence in one night. Brilliantly acted by all throughout and such an emotional end. Oh and I got educated on what all the emojis heart colours mean, added bonus.”

“I’m so impressed with the acting of this little boy and the more impact was that the emoji colours have a different meaning wtf I feel old,” said someone else.

Another viewer remarked: “Never knew of the whole sub culture of emojis and meanings. The power of this hugely significant and useful art collection continues to blow my mind.”

“The conversation they have about the double meanings of all the emojis and the colours… I’m so lost since when did they mean all that?” asked another baffled fan.

One quipped that “over 30s should be taught emojis”.
