Netflix’s four-part drama series Adolescence has received high praised from Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who also confirmed that the show will be made available to secondary schools in the UK
Adolescence will reportedly be shown in schools across the UK.
Netflix’s new hit drama, starring Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper, follows a young boy who murders another child at his school. The series follows his family as they struggle to come to terms with the charges.
The four-part series has been praised for drawing attention to controversial male influencers, such as Andrew Tate, and their influence on young men and boys.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a roundtable with the writers and producers of Adolescence and celebrated their work as “groundbreaking”.
“As a father, watching this show with my teenage son and daughter, I can tell you – it hit home hard. It’s an important initiative to encourage as many pupils as possible to watch the show.”
He said that talking “openly” with children and “exploring conversations they’re having with their peers is vital” if adults are to “properly support them” while “navigating contemporary challenges”.
“This isn’t a challenge politicians can simply legislate for. Believe me, if I could pull a lever to solve it, I would. Only by listening and learning from the experiences of young people and charities can we tackle the issues this groundbreaking show raises.”
Starmer has now confirmed that Adolescence will be made available to all secondary schools throughout the UK via Into Film+. Netflix’s official X/Twitter account also announced the news on their profile.
“NEW: From today we are making Adolescence available to all secondary schools across the UK through Into Film+. Additionally, healthy relationships charity Tender will produce guides and resources for teachers, parents and carers to help navigate conversations around the series.”
Their tweet was followed by praised from streamers as one person wrote “excellent” while another said: “This was a superb series. The boy actor was superb playing vulnerable and unhinged flawlessly.”
A third person said: “Brilliant news. Really hope that parents of young boys are having these difficult conversations with them about what they engage with online. This isn’t anti-men, it’s pro women safety. Well done Netflix!”
The show’s co-writer Jack Thorne has said that they created the show to “provoke a conversation” and ask “how do we stop this growing crisis?”
Thorne said that the fact this project will be available in schools “is beyond their expectations” and hopes that the series will “lead teachers talking to students,” but also that “it will lead students to talk amongst themselves”.
Adolescence stars Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, Erin Doherty, Ashley Walters, Faye Marsay and Jo Hartley, and is available to stream now on Netflix.
