Comedian Russell was charged with sexual assault and rape by the Met Police earlier this month, and now it’s reported Oasis singer Noel has distanced himself from him
Oasis star Noel Gallagher has reportedly cut ties with his pal Russell Brand following the comedian’s rape and sex assault charges.
Russell, 49, has been charged with rape, indecent assault and sexual assault. The actor’s charges relate to four separate women and the alleged crimes span from 1999 to 2005.
He has been interviewed by police on multiple occasions over a number of sex offence allegations. Brand has always denied the “very serious” allegations, claiming all his relationships were “always consensual” – and he’s continuing to make public appearances.
It’s now claimed that Noel, a close friend of Russell’s for years, has now distanced himself from the actor ahead of his band’s upcoming tour. It’s reported that this came following advice from Noel’s daughter Anais.
It’s alleged Anais believed Noel’s links to Brand “wasn’t a good look” in light of Brand’s current legal issues. As a result, the Wonderwall star has cleared Brand off his social media platforms, both professional and private.
Speaking to The Sun, a source close to the family explained: “Anaïs realised that her dad’s close links to Brand and all the stuff they’d done together wasn’t a good look. She’s very PR savvy.
“There was a discussion and Noel agreed cutting ties was best. Anaïs, Noel and the rest of the family are horrified at Brand’s alleged behaviour and had no idea what was going on.”
Noel and Russell first met during the Forgetting Sarah Marshall star’s stand-up show back in 2005. Since then, the pair got on like a house on fire, with Noel even being Russell’s best man at his wedding to chart topper Katy Perry back in 2010.
Russell himself returned the favour one year later for Noel’s wedding to his now-former wife Sara McDonald back in 2011. Following on from this, the pair had been good pals – keeping in touch with each other regularly.
Brand was interviewed by police following Channel 4’s Dispatches documentary in September 2023, which revealed a number of serious sex allegations against him. It was a joint investigation between Channel 4, the Times and the Sunday Times.
Russell took to his social media accounts to defend himself after the allegations were made: “What I never was, was a rapist. I’ve never engaged in non-consensual activity.”
He added: “I’m now going to have the opportunity to defend these charges in court and I’m incredibly grateful for that.”
He has been charged with one allegation of rape, one of indecent assault, one of oral rape and two counts of sexual assault. He has been told to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 2.
The Met Police’s detective superintendent Andy Furphy, leading the investigation into Brand, said: “The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers. The Met’s investigation remains open and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case, or anyone who has any information, to come forward and speak with police.
“A dedicated team of investigators is available via email at CIT@met.police.uk. Support is also available by contacting the independent charity, Rape Crisis at 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line.”
