Before Hollywood A-listers take the red carpet once again for the Oscars 2025, we reflect on the award show’s most memorable moments you might have missed.

The biggest night in Hollywood is just days away, with the Oscars taking place this Sunday, March 2, and we can expect movie stars from across the globe to all sit under one roof – though the Dolby Theatre was described as a “total bomb site” in the days leading up to it.

As we gear up for arguably the most reputable awards show of the season, we’re taking a look back at some of its most uncomfortable, cringe-worthy, and iconic moments.

High on acid

Starting off strong with what was alleged to be a drug-fuelled Oscars moment, featuring the creators of the US animated series South Park. In 2000, Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Marc Shaiman, the brains behind the hit comedy series, rocked up to the red carpet in Jennifer Lopez and Gwyneth Paltrow-inspired outfits.

Long after the hilarious looks, two of the men hinted at being on drugs for the red carpet moment. They told late-night chat show host David Letterman that they were “sheening their heads off”, the Washington Post reported.

This comment led fans to believe the South Park stars were on cocaine, but they soon set the record straight during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel in 2011. The South Park masterminds said: “We were like, ‘Let’s take a little bit of acid.’ So we did that, and, of course, an hour later we were like, ‘We gotta wear the dresses!’ The thing is, we didn’t take a lot of acid.”

Emma Stone whispering during Jimmy Kimmel’s speech

In a viral moment at the 2024 Oscars, Emma Stone came under a bit of heat after a clip surfaced of her appearing to say something while Jimmy Kimmel was on stage. The actress was seen mouthing something after Kimmel mentioned the film she was nominated for, which lip-readers picked up and interpreted, saying she was calling him “a ‘p**ck’.

It was the same year that Emma received her award with a ripped dress and had to hold her dress together with one hand, and her Oscar in the other. An interviewer asked Emma about the awkward moment with Kimmel, but the Poor Things star seemed confused about the whole ordeal. She confirmed that she didn’t call him the word people were accusing her of, but didn’t share what it was that she said, and so the mystery still remains…

Lady Gaga to the rescue!

The pop icon Lady Gaga was walking the famous carpet in 2023, stunning in a sheer gown, when a photographer tripped and fell. Sweeping in, she ran over to help the person that fell, and other photographers captured the down-to-earth moment.

Gaga helped the photographer back up to his feet and checked that he was ok before continuing to pose and make her way down the carpet. Fans of the pop star were quick to make the moment go viral, praising her for her act of kindness.

Laying eggs

It was the year of the 2001 Oscars, when Gladiator won best picture and Julia Roberts swept the awards for her role as Erin Brockovich, and Björk wore THAT swan dress. It was off the stage and on the red carpet that the Icelandic singer made headlines for her outfit resembling a swan.

She rocked a full-body stocking, paired with a white swan neck and orange beak wrapped around her, and a big, white puffy tutu. Topping off the look were the accessories – eggs.

The singer pretended to lay the eggs as she walked the world’s most famous carpet and made fashion history. This peculiar dress has gone on to be referenced throughout pop culture and inspired endless comedic parodies.
