Singer Tom Grennan has faced a nightmare setback which might rule him out of this year’s Soccer Aid, and he was seen sitting up in a hospital bed with his leg in a cast
Tom Grennan ended up in hospital and had to have emergency surgery.
The chart-topping singer, 29, is due to play in this year’s Soccer Aid for England once more but could be forced to miss out due to a leg injury. He’s had to have emergency surgery on his right leg as his tendons have “gone”.
Grennan, who used to be a youth player at Luton Town, is one of England’s best players in the annual football match raising money for Unicef. Last year, he joined the likes of Robbie Williams, Paddy McGuinness, Erin Doherty, Danny Dyer and Bobby Brazier on the pitch for the England team.
A snap of Tom showed him sitting up in a hospital bed with his leg wrapped in a plaster, giving a thumbs up for the camera. The Found What I’ve Been Looking For singer said he wished he had a more “rock ‘n’ roll” injury story to tell people.
He told The Sun: “I would love to whip up a Louis Walsh-style story for you, like he did in that Boyzone documentary recently, but unfortunately it isn’t quite as exciting as that. I’ll try to think of something more rock ’n’ roll I can tell people.
“My tendons have gone in my leg and I’ve had to have surgery to get back to normal. But obviously my first thought was Soccer Aid.
“It’s pretty much my favourite thing of the year – the chance to get out there and play – so that’s the goal to get back for. I’m gutted, not what I had in mind.”
Grennan said it’s a good thing he doesn’t have any gigs scheduled during his recovery window, so he’s hoping he’ll be able to get back in time to play. The BRIT nominee has since left hospital and posted an Instagram snap showing him working out.
Grennan was hospitalised in 2022 in New York City with a ruptured eardrum after an “unprovoked attack”. He’s said to have been attacked and robbed outside of a bar in Manhatten after performing a show.
