Tony Slattery 'will never name paedo priest' after quitting 10g-a-day coke habit

Troubled comic Tony Slattery says he will never name the priest who abused him when he was eight.

Tony, 60, reckons outing the paedophile “would serve no social or psychological purpose”.

The comedian, best known as a regular on Whose Line Is It Anyway? in the 90s, has made a new film about his painful past.

He said: “I really don’t think it is going to do me any favours in money terms or career advancement.

“But it may be a good thing to have done.

“That sounds self-aggrandising, but I don’t care – I feel better for doing the documentary.”

He said the film, What’s The Matter With Tony Slattery?, was not an attempt at a full comeback to telly work.

In it, he opens up about his bipolar disorder and battles with substance misuse.

And he talks emotionally of what happened to him when he was abused by the priest as a boy.

The star disappeared from the public eye after a breakdown following a period when he would do 10g of cocaine a day.

He also turned to booze, but says he has now cut his intake by “about a quarter. And that’s a start”.

Tony spent years as a recluse before giving a landmark interview last year in which he first revealed his harrowing childhood experiences.

In the new film for the BBC, he is on a mission to get to the heart of his mental health problems.

He goes to see Ciaran Mulholland, a professor who is an expert in the effects of childhood trauma.

Tony gives grim details of the ordeal he suffered as a boy and ends up crying next to his devastated partner Mark Michael Hutchinson.

The film will air on BBC Two on May 21 at 9pm.
