Corrie hit with 'offensive content' warning over Chinese restaurant scene

Coronation Street viewers have been warned one episode, dating back to 1968, includes language that some fans may find offensive.

BritBox features classic episodes of the ITV soap opera on its streaming service, but revealed one episode, centred around Hilda and Stan Ogden, features remarks “from a bygone era”.

Titled Stan and Hilda’s Big Night Out, the episode sees Hilda and Stan, played by Bernard Youens and Jean Alexander, going on a date to a Chinese restaurant.

According to The Sun, the accompanying warning reads: “Stan takes Hilda to a Chinese restaurant, but she doesn’t quite get the meal she expected.

“With language from a bygone era which some viewers may find offensive.”

At one point in the episode, Stan tries to speak to the waiter in French, only to remark: “I couldn’t speak to him in English, a son of the Orient.”

He later described the food as “foreign tack,” adding: “French, Eyetie, Kraut, you can’t whack it.”

It isn’t the only Corrie episode to feature a warning – BritBox has penned similar warnings regarding one episode that sees Vera Lomax die, and another in which Ernie Bishop is shot dead.

A BritBox representative told The Sun: “Programming on the service that contains potentially sensitive language or attitudes of their era has carried appropriate warnings since our launch in 2019.”

BritBox has added warnings to a number of classic shows, reevaluating the content for a modern audience.

Nineties favourite Keeping Up Appearances, which starred Patricia Routledge as Hyacinth and Clive Swift as her husband Richard, has similarly received a viewer discretion warning.

Addressing the warning, BritBox told Daily Star: “We review and refresh BritBox’s programme catalogue on an ongoing basis.

“Programming on the service that contains potentially sensitive language or attitudes of their era has carried appropriate warnings since our launch in November 2019, to ensure the right guidance is in place for viewers who are choosing to watch on demand.”

The League of Gentlemen and The Mighty Boosh have also been removed from Netflix, reportedly due to the use of blackface in the productions.
