It’s only been a matter of days since Coronation Street newbie Phill’s Whittaker’s mum, Mimi, has arrived to the cobbles.
However, many viewers instantly recognise her mannerisms and energy to be similar to some of TV’s iconic characters, including a former Corrie matriarch.
Fans of the soap have seen that Mimi has already caused some havoc and riled up tensions in Weatherfield, despite only joining the Streets a few days ago.
In a recent episode, viewers saw Fiz put out to find Phill and Mimi drawing up plans for his party and ordering revolting party dresses for her and the girls.
Fiz was quick to show her disgust about her daughter’s outfits and with Phill firmly on his mother’s side, Fiz went off to drown her sorrows with mulled wine at the Christmas market, where Tyrone found her.
There’s no hiding Fiz’s feelings about Phill’s mum, Mimi, as the pair have already butted heads, proving that Mimi is on the cobbles to cause some some drama and most definitely will not back down.
However, for many Corrie fans, the introduction of “snobby” and “sarcastic” Mimi left them feeling nostalgic as Corrie lovers quickly drew on Mimi’s resemblance to many familiar TV legends.
Many viewers turned to Twitter to express how Mimi had similar mannerisms and energy as the character, Hyacinth Bucket or “Bouquet”, as one should know, a 90s snobbish matriarch who appeared on the BBC show, Keeping Up Appearances.
One fan took to Twitter and wrote: “Mimi is Hyacinth Bucket re-imagined, isn’t she?”
Another added: “Mimi would give Hyacinth Bucket a run for her money.”
However, some Corrie fans demanded for a former Corrie matriarch, Evelyn Plummer, to make a return to the soap.
Fans were eager to see Evelyn, who played Tyrone’s Grandmother, face off against Mimi, as viewers agreed that would make for some great TV.
One fan tweeted: “Mimi Vs Evelyn please make this happen that would be brilliant #Corrie.”
Other comparisons have also been made with Mimi reminding viewers of purple haired, Dame Edna.
The actress who plays Mimi, Margot Leicester, 75, is no newbie to the soap world and has made many television appearances, including Doctors, Holby City, Casualty, Midsomer Murders and The Bill, where she’s played a variety of characters.
Coronation Street usually airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
