Orange Is The New Black and Seinfeld star Kathryn Kates dies after cancer battle

Kathryn Kates has tragically died at the age of 73 following a battle with cancer.

The veteran actress’ death was confirmed by her representatives at Headline Talent Agency.

In a statement they shared that the star had died on Saturday in Florida.

The post read: “Kathryn has been our client for many years, and we have grown much closer to her in this last year since she knew of her cancer returning.

“She was always incredibly brave and wise and approached every role with the greatest of passion. She will be greatly missed.”

Kathryn started her career in a few small roles in the 1980s before starring on hit programmes such as Seinfeld, Thunder Alley and Matlock.

The native New Yorker later appeared in Lizzie McGuire, Caroline in the City, Judging Amy, Rescue Me and many more throughout the 90s and 21st century.

Later on in her career, she starred on popular series Orange Is the New Black and played the mother of Piper Chapman’s ex-fiancée Amy Kanter-Bloom.

Kathryn has no doubt been a hit in the acting world as she also featured in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as well as Jennifer Lopez’s drama Shades of Blue as judge Marlene Simons.

The 73-year-old won Best Actress at the NYCTV Festival last year for her role in Welcome to Sarajevo.

Fans have taken to social media to share their condolences following the tragic news.

One wrote: “This gorgeous heart. This incredible force. Broken heart Love you #KathrynKates.”

Another penned: “I am so upset to hear about the passing of Kathryn Kates, an actress of tremendous empathy, vigor and joy.”

A third said: “The incredible @kathrynjkates passed away.

“Kathryn Kates was someone I knew via my daughter having worked with her & we kept in touch, I greatly admired her work & she knew it.

“I told her many times and I’m glad I did – outspoken, true, caring, memorable actress in every part.”
