Rebekah Vardy’s agent is said to have begged her client not to take on Colleen Rooney in court, leading to the now-infamous “Wagatha Christie” trial.
Rebekah is accusing Coleen of defamation after she claimed that Rebekah had been leaking stories about her to the press.
Colleen, 36, the wife of football ace Wayne Rooney, laid a trap by posting fake stories on her private Instagram account to try and catch whoever was selling gossip about her and her family to the press.
Colleen alleged it must have been Rebekah, 40, who was leaking the information because she changed her settings so only Rebekah could see her content and therefore caught her “red-handed”.
Rebekah, who is married to Leicester striker Jamie Vardy, denies she was behind the leaks and is now suing Coleen for libel – resulting in a week of intimate evidence at the High Court.
Rebekah’s agent Caroline Watts, who is said to be too ill to give evidence herself, reportedly tried to convince her client not to take legal action against Coleen, as it would get “expensive” and a lot of “damaging correspondence” would be uncovered.
According to the Mail on Sunday, a friend of Caroline said: “She was determined that she was going to get her apology from Coleen at any cost, so she just kept going and going.
“It was like Becky was on a runaway train and there was nothing Caroline could do about it.”
The pal went on to say that it was “extraordinary” for Caroline to see after she had spent years advising Rebekah but it just got “out of control”.
A court heard Rebekah has also done a shocking about-turn and even accepted in her witness statement that Caroline could be behind the leaks. She previously had insisted her agent was “not the source”.
The day after Caroline’s phone was ordered by a judge to be searched it was dropped in the North Sea while she was on a boat trip – one of a “catalogue of unfortunate events” with regards to evidence, said Colleen’s barrister.
Rebekah also denies deleting incriminating WhatsApp messages between her and Caroline, a court heard.
In another exchange in court on Thursday, Coleen’s barrister David Sherbourne accused Rebekah of not wanting to “do the dirty work herself” and roped in Caroline who is refusing to give evidence on her behalf.
He went on to claim in court: “It not her that betrayed you as you suggest it is you that have betrayed her by throwing her under the bus.”
Vardy replied: “That’s a joke.”
