Man ‘lost control of his body’ after winning £99,000 on ITV show in last minute twist

An ITV gameshow winner says he “lost control” of his body when he unexpectedly bagged £99,000.

Daniel O’Halloran, 24, said he “never in his wildest dreams,” thought he would win The 1% Club on Saturday ( April 27 ).

The quiz show, which is hosted by comedian Lee Mack, sees 100 contestants answer questions based on reasoning, logic and maths.

Daniel, from Rock Ferry, unexpectedly joined the show after his superfan mum applied for him to take part.

The 1% Club sees contestants compete to reach the final in a bid to win up to £100,000.

But in the last round, they have to answer a final question which only 1% of the country can get right.

Speaking about his gameshow journey, Daniel said: “I was quite confident in getting to the latter stages of the show, but I never in my wildest dreams imagined taking home that much money. I thought if I got to £10,000 with no money to fall back on, I’d take the £10,000 and wouldn’t gamble.”

Daniel initially was going to take the £10,000 until he decided it was too much of a safe option.

His gut feeling proved right after his last maths question was announced as correct.

“I lost control of my body,” said Daniel. “I was running around celebrating on stage in total shock. I never thought I’d be standing there on the show, let alone winning it.”

Daniel said the toughest part of the process was keeping his winning news a secret from his loved ones.

He added: “It was very difficult, there were some moments I nearly blurted it out or my family would ask me and I couldn’t keep the smile on my face. I only told my grandma and a few friends.”

The rest of his family found out about his win when the show aired last week.

Daniel continued: “When they were watching it, they couldn’t believe I’d done it. It was the best thing to see.

“They were in total shock – they said some things you probably couldn’t print in the paper! They couldn’t believe I’d kept it secret.”
