Jason’s early career
Jason Momoa was born on August 1, 1979 in Honolulu, the capital of the U.S. state of Hawaii. Jason lived there, until he moved to Norwalk in Iowa at the age of six.
Having studied at Norwalk High School, he returned to Hawaii and went on to attend the state university.
Aged 20, Momoa made his acting debut onscreen in the hit TV series Baywatch. Playing the role of Jason Ioane, the actor was part of the main cast for the last two series of the show, before its cancellation in 2001.
After his stint on the show, Jason appeared in several other movies and TV shows with major roles. These included 2004’s Johnson Vacation, Stargate Atlantis and North Shore, all of which playing a main character.
His most well-known film during this period was Conan the Barbarian, released in 2011.
In the film, Momoa played the title character, joined by other A-list Hollywood stars including Morgan Freeman, Ron Perlman and Rose McGowan.
But despite the all-star cast, the film flopped at the box office, making a loss of just under $30 million.
Change in fortune
After the bomb at the box office, Jason was case on the HBO series Game of Thrones, playing powerful warlord Khal Drogo.
Momoa was in two series of the show, but his portrayal had turned some heads, earning a CinEuphoria Honourary Award for his role.
It was after his time on Game of Thrones that his breakout role came – playing Aquaman in the DC adaptation of the comic series.
Jason had first taken on the role in the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.
But DC Studios soon decided to give Aquaman a standalone Aquaman film, with Momoa at the centre portraying the superhero.
Aquaman would go on to be a box office smash when it was released in 2018. Estimates after the first weekend showed the film made over $67m.
Overall, the film grossed over $1.1bn, with lead star Momoa earning a cool $3m for his work.
Strength to strength
Due to the success of the film, Momoa took on the role again in other films including The Lego Movie: The Second Part and Peacemaker.
But Jason was able to break away just as easily and act in standalone films.
Throughout his career, Jason has acted in several movies including Sweet Girl, Once Upon A Time in Venice and Braven.
It was through Dune, however, that Momoa made waves with his portrayal of Duncan Idaho.
Dune was another hit at cinemas, making a total of over $400m. Jason earned another $2m for his effort.
But Jason said that he will always return to DC Studios to bring Aquaman to life.
In an interview with Variety, Momoa confirmed: “I’ll always be Aquaman. Ain’t anyone coming in there and taking s**t.
“There might be some other characters, too. I can play other things, too. I can be funny and savage and charming.”
Ahead of the release of Aquaman’s sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Jason’s net worth is estimated to be around $25m, based on film roles and brand endorsements.
Marriage and split
Jason tied the knot with Lenny Kravitz’s ex-wife Lisa Bonet in 2017 after beginning their romance in 2005.
The pair welcomed two children together, daughter Lola Iolani and son Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha, but announced their split in 2022.
Jason, 43, and Lisa, 55, have both raked in the cash over the years, as Lisa is estimated to be worth an impressive $50million, and is said to earn $3m a year in royalties from The Cosby Show.
Whilst the pair have not officially divorced, their assets would be split and Jason would be quids in.
