Comedian Rory Bremner says British politics too much of a shambles to joke about

TV impressionist Rory Bremner says he’s he is struggling to find much to laugh about in British politics.

He has poked fun at government ministers since breaking through in the mid-80s – but is dismayed by the current crop. “I look back at 2012, with the Olympics, as a high point,” he said.

“The vision of Britain that Danny Boyle created in the opening ceremony – embracing the health service, industrial revolution, inventions and engineering, our sense of humour – was one I felt I could be proud of. The last 10 or 11 years since then, it’s pretty much disintegrated and I feel dismayed by that.

“The level to which politicians have become so shameless – we see it in Donald Trump, we saw it with Boris Johnson and Partygate, and now we have a Conservative party and leader who after 13 years is saying vote for me and get change. What?

“Where have you been for the last 13 years?” The comic, added: “They’re trying to pull an extraordinary trick and they already pulled one in convincing people that folk like Johnson and Jacob Rees-mogg, who are Etonian to the core, were actually on the side of the people against the terrible Liberal elite.

“What’s happened to Britain in the past 10 years, I think of it as ABC – Austerity, Brexit, and I’ll let you decide what or who the C stands for.”
