Presenter Jon Kay issues BBC Breakfast update as he’s forced to bring in sniffer dogs

BBC Breakfast presenter Jon Kay joked that he sent an extermination crew into the BBC studios to hunt out bed bugs.

During Tuesday’s (October 17) visit to the morning show, the 53-year-old broadcaster and his co-host Sally Nugent woke up the nation with the latest news hitting the headlines. Some of the biggest stories on the show included the ongoing attacks in Gaza and the growing concerns around the rise in bedbugs in the UK.

Later on in the show, the presenting duo welcomed bedbug detector Kobie the spaniel and his handler onto the show as she shared his special talent. Spaniels are known for their incredible sense of smell and are often used in the police to sniff out drugs and bombs.

But this furry friend has a particular talent in sniffing out bedbugs as his handler Gary Jakeman, the chief executive of K9 Detention Services in Solihull, told viewers on the show. Following the rise in bedbug cases, there has been an increasing demand for specialist UK firms to deploy trained sniffer dogs to detect the infestations from private homes to five-star hotels.

The dog handler explained how he has since trained his two dogs Kobie and Milo to sniff out the creepy critters. The trio’s services are increasingly sought after by hotels and individuals who suspect the bugs have infiltrated their properties.

It’s fair to say the loveable dog was overwhelmed to be on the signature red sofa and wasted no time in seeking out affection from the presenters while his handler talked about their new business on the show. Gary explained: “They are trained exactly the same way a police dog would detect drugs, firearms, money, any type of contraband.

While the black and white pooch sniffed all around the studio, Jon joked that he was checking to see if the television studio had been infected with bedbugs. He nervously asked: “Has he found some then?” as Gary chuckled: “He’s having a sniff around.”

Sally added: “He hasn’t gone for the sofa which I’m very, very relieved about!” Luckily, the furry friend came back with a clean report at the end of the segment, much to the relief of the cast and crew.

After the show, Jon took to his Instagram Story to share a sweet snap with his new four-legged friend who sat beside him on the sofa. He cheekily captioned the post: “Kobie the spaniel can hunt out bedbugs… [nervous emoji, bug emoji].”

Jon quickly followed the post up with a close-up image of Kobie’s adorable face, adding: “(Didn’t find any) @bbcbreakfast.” It comes after tensions started to rise later on in the show when Jon fumed “thanks for nothing” after Carol delivered the latest weather reports.

As she joined the pair on the show, the blonde bombshell warned viewers about the storm that is set to hit the UK over the next few days. She explained: “It’s the calm before the storm because we quite literally have a story coming our way.”

The meteorologist revealed that Storm Babet is on its way and will bring windy conditions with severe gales for some parts of the country as well as torrential rain that is likely to occur in Scotland due to the heavy rainfall. Carol signed off her report by saying: “We’re not done with all the rain even by Thursday, there more to come.”

Jon couldn’t hide his disappointment as he explained: “More to come? Oh dear me. Carol, thank you… for nothing.” Sally was quick to defend her co-star, adding: “It’s not actually her fault Jon” as Jon replied: “I know it’s not her fault but we need to blame somebody.”
