Ringo Starr’s son Zak Starkey has revealed his father gave him just one lesson on the drums before telling him “you’re on your own”.
The legendary Beatles drummer had never encouraged his young son to follow in his footsteps, who was instead originally planning on playing the guitar. Starkey said it was only when sifting through his parents’ record collection and listening to the “exciting” drumming on a record from The Who he decided to pick up the sticks.
The 58-year-old – who would go on to become drummer for the famous rock band – was drawn when he recognised drummer Keith Moon from parties his dad had thrown. However, Ringo was less than interested in giving his son a helping hand.

Recalling the interaction with his famous dad on the Brydon & podcast, he said: “When I was about seven, I liked Marc Bolan a lot, I learnt to play the guitar. “Going through my parents’ record collection and I come across a record called Meaty, Beaty Big and Bouncy which I’d recommend to anyone – it’s a compilation of their 60s hits, it’s absolutely fantastic.”

He continued: “And I look on the back and it’s that dude that when my dad has a party, comes up and hangs out in our room and feeds the hamster and plays Monopoly and hangs out with us. So, that day, I switched to drums because I listened to it and the drumming was just so exciting.”
“My dad gave me one lesson, he came in the next day and said ‘try this’ and I said ‘I can do that’, he goes ‘you’re on your own mate, see ya’.” Asked if he’d never tried to get him into the drums before, Starkey answered: “No. He wanted me to be a doctor and a lawyer so I could do both for him for nothing.”
Zak clearly managed to learn well enough without the help of his dad, though. He’s gone on to play with the likes of The Who, the Lightning Seeds, and Johnny Marr.
