She was warned by singer Carole King before completing the purchase of her house in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles that the deal threw in a ghost of a miserable divorcee but Courteney Cox went ahead anyway. Visitors who came to stay with the Scream star told of seeing a woman sitting on the edge of a bed, but it was curtains when the former Friends actress was freaked out when a delivery man warned her the place was haunted and he could see someone standing behind her.
Home, not alone
Sin City and Machete star Jessica Alba reckons she was attacked by a ghost when she was asleep as a teenager. The then-17-year-old was kipping in her family home when the duvet flew off her bed and she was frozen to the spot. But not in fear. She recalled: “I felt this pressure and couldn’t get up. I couldn’t scream, talk, do anything. Something definitely took the covers off me. There was definitely something in my parent’s old house. They got it blessed, burned sage and stuff since then.”
Ca-ghoul
Long before experiencing the madness of the Matrix, Keanu Reeves had a brush with the paranormal. While with his nanny at an apartment in New York when he was between the ages of six and seven the John Wick actor reckons he they both witnessed paranormal activity. On the chat show Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2014, Keanu said: “There was a doorway and all of a sudden this jacket comes waving through, empty. There’s no head, no body, no legs. Then it disappears.”
Fantôme figure
LaLaurie House in New Orleans was said to have been where socialite Madame Delphine LaLaurie tortured slaves and has its story told on American Horror Story: Coven starring Kathy Bates as the 19th century socialite. Ghost Rider actor Nicholas Cage owned the house, where ghostly voices attributed to both LaLaurie and her victims plus photos of spectres were recorded, until he defaulted on the mortgage in 2009. Nic, who played Dracula in Renfield, said that year: “Other people have a beachfront property; I have a ghost front property.”
Bleu are ya?
He had a hit film with Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, and the grumpy spirit of a woman in his Hollywood mansion certainly helped with Matthew McConaughey’s method acting. Talking about the spook he named Madame Bleu, Matthew said: “I was not even under the influence and she was there. She wasn’t that happy. It didn’t seem like she was going to be much fun to hang around or have in my house so I went ahead and stood my ground.” Standing up to the spectre making it clear he wouldn’t move, both the actor and his friends who came to visit felt the presence of the lady in his hallway before she eventually moved on.
Well, pie never!
American Pie legend Alyson Hannigan had the ghost of a bloke hanging around her former Spanish-style bungalow in Santa Monica, LA. On her way out one evening a friend warned the star the ghost of a male appeared to follow them out of the building. And that night when she got back, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress saw the silhouette of a bloke in her bathroom doorway while her husband was fast asleep next to her. In 2003, she said: “He’s very friendly. I’m thinking of putting a little chalkboard to see if he will write his name down.”
