Comedian slammed for ‘Kate Middleton died 18 months ago’ joke after Photoshop storm

British comedian John Oliver joked there’s a “non-zero” percent chance Kate Middleton has been “dead for 18 months” following the Photoshop fiasco.

The Princess of Wales admitted this week she “edited” her Mother’s Day picture after several discrepancies led to some of the world’s biggest picture agencies putting a a “kill notice” on the image.

It led to a number of wild internet conspiracies, particularly given the royal has not been seen in public since having abdominal surgery in January.

But, despite the Palace regularly assuring the public Kate is simply taking time out to recover from her operation, comedian John Oliver made a bizarre, and somewhat tasteless, joke that she was “dead”.

Appearing on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, the American talkshow host asked Oliver: “I have to ask you. What the f*** is going on with Kate Middleton? This Photoshop thing is…” John explained he was “out” when the news hit, admitting: “I thought let’s just ignore this, we’ve moved on. Until the Photoshop thing.

“You’re almost handling it badly in an impressive way at this point,” he said. Cohen then said: “Because isn’t their motto, ‘Never complain, never explain’? And they had her explaining on Twitter?”

Andy quipped: “Yes. There is a not-zero chance she died 18 months ago. They might be Weekend at Bernie’s-ing this situation. Non-zero – I’m not saying it happened! I’m saying non-zero. Until it’s proved otherwise, until we see her with a copy of the day’s newspaper…” The comedian drew a hand over his throat to signify a chopping motion that had the audience giggling.

Unsurprisingly, the joke didn’t go down too well with fans, with one fuming: “Kate’s allowed some privacy!” Someone else agreed: “Basically it’s none of his or anyone else’s damn business. Let the woman recover in peace.” And a third said: “John Oliver has absolutely no respect for the monarchy.”

Kate hasn’t been seen in public since Christmas Day 2023, when she attended church services at Sandringham. On January 17, Kensington Palace announced she had undergone a “planned abdominal surgery” and said it was unlikely she would take part in public engagements until after Easter (March 31).
