One seriously controversial film is arriving on Netflix.
American Psycho is due to begin streaming on the platform in July and since its release back in 2000, the Christian Bale flick has garnered quite a lot of controversy. The twisted horror comedy follows the life of Patrick Bateman, one of the most recognisable characters in Hollywood.
From his blood spattered face to his iconic plastic coat scene, from his countless iconic quotes to his savage quips and side eyes, Bateman is a satirical version of a rich New York City investment banker.

To everyone else, Patrick just seems quiet and reserved, but once treated to his inner monologue cinemagoers soon realise that Bateman is not all he’s made out to be. The film features a whole host of famous faces, including Bale himself, Jared Leto, Willem Dafoe, Chloe Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon and Josh Lucas.
The IMDb description of the film reads: “A wealthy New York City investment banking executive, Patrick Bateman, hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies.”
Throughout American Psycho, Bateman is revealed as a serial killer who ruthlessly tortures women and dismembers his victims – however (spoiler alert) there are many fan theories that the entire flick takes place in his imagination.
The film is based on the book of the same name written by Bret Easton Ellis, which faced huge controversy when it was first released back in 1991.
Allison Kelly of The Observer has said that although “some countries [consider it] so potentially disturbing that it can only be sold in shrink wrapped,” some “critics rave about it” and “academics revel in its transgressive and postmodern qualities”.
Due to the violence and gore featured throughout the book, some countries have censored the novel altogether. The Guardian reported that the author received 13 death threats and Forbes reported that Ellis was allegedly made to “sign a declaration to acknowledge that he read the threats as a way to prevent the publisher from being sued in the event the author was murdered”.
