Maya Jama was joined in the Love Island Aftersun studio by her mum just days after confirming her split from Stormzy.
The 29-year-old host confirmed she was longer in a relationship with the rapper, 30, on Wednesday (July 17) in a social media message to fans.
The joint statement read: “We’ve been laughing whilst drafting this because we never, ever, in a million years thought we’d be the couple announcing a breakup, but for the sake of clarity and, more importantly, to allow us the space and grace that’s needed for us both to be able to navigate this next bit of our lives with peace, we thought it might be best to.”
Describing their love story, she wrote: “We fell madly in love in 2014, broke up in 2019, and then spent five years manoeuvring life apart.”
Maya was back on presenting duty on Sunday (July 21) as she present the live spin-off show and she kicked off the latest episode by telling viewers that her mum, Sadie, was in the studio. The camera then panned over showing Sadie proudly smiling.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, fans couldn’t believe Sadie’s ageless beauty. One fan penned: “Maya Jamas mum is GORG!” Another added: “Maya, THAT’S MUM? Wow.” A third persons said: “Wow, Maya’s mum, it makes sense.”
Maya was born in Bristol and raised by her mum Sadie. Her mother gave birth to her when she was 18 years old. Sadie is of Swedish descent while Maya’s father Hussein is of Somali descent. Sadie named her daughter after the US author and poet Maya Angelou.
Sadie previously appeared alongside her famous daughter in All Round To Mrs Brown’s Boys. Maya is incredibly close to her mum and also her brother Omar.
She previously told Marie Claire magazine how thankful she is that her mum found a new partner who is kind to her. Thanks to her step dad she got to see what a real loving relationship is like after her dad wasn’t around much while she was growing up, due to being in and out of prison.
Maya often talks about the great relationship she has with her mother. She even told the Evening Standard that she reckons the smaller parent-daughter age gap has brought them even closer over the years.
Love Island Aftersun airs Sundays on ITV2 at 10pm
