Nineties pop icon admits she won’t do Strictly – but for a surprising reason

Nineties star Melanie Blatt has revealed why she would be deterred from joining Strictly Come Dancing.

The All Saints singer spoke exclusively to the Daily Star amid the BBC show’s controversy, which has been filled with misconduct probes and pro exits.

However, the reason she may turn down the opportunity has nothing to do with any of the recent controversies, and all to do with one of her personal insecurities.

When asked if she would be up for giving the show a go, Melanie said: “I don’t know. Maybe, I don’t know. I mean, I’ve got cankles, so that’s the main worry about having to go on Strictly as I’d be like, ‘Oh my god, people are going to see them’.

“But I need to grow to love my cankles and embrace them and let the world see them. So that would be my main, but I’ll talk to my therapist about it,” she joked.

“If I did I would be the first Strictly star ever to wear just baggy trousers to dance in,” she laughed as she made reference to her girl band attire. Cankles is an informal term for when a thicker ankle appears to be the same size as the calf – it can be caused by temporary swelling.

Melanie is now approaching 50 but looks just as good as she did back in the band’s heyday. However, she revealed that her ageless appearance is a result of some rather unusual things.

Sharing her beauty secrets, Melanie humbly confessed: “I mean, my friend said it best the other day… I got my makeup done professionally, because I don’t really do anything these days.

“And I walked in, he said, ‘Oh, my God, you look amazing!’ And he said, ‘Ah, I see what you’re doing. You never look amazing. So, when you do wear makeup, you look amazing.’

“So that is the trick. Just look bad most of the time, so that when you do even put one lick of mascara on, people think you look amazing. That it!”

She laughed: “But honestly, apart from a little bit of Botox, I’m terrible. Like, I still go on sunbeds. I’m still smoking, like, everything that you’re not supposed to do, I’m doing still.”

Whatnot is the largest livestream shopping platform in Europe and North America and according to its new research, Y2K nostalgia is taking over Britain, with almost half (45%) of Brits agreeing there has been a serious comeback in Y2K fashion and almost two-thirds (65%) of women admit they like to see old trends come back into fashion.
