David Hasselhoff’s former wife Pamela Bach – who has died by suicide aged 62 – once opened up about the impact the Baywatch actor’s past alcohol troubles had on them
David Hasselhoff’s ex-wife Pamela Bach – who has died aged 62 – once told how the star’s battle with alcohol “ate away” at the family’s life together.
The former Baywatchactress was found dead at home in the Hollywood Hills on Wednesday (March 5) after shooting herself, with neighbours hearing her daughter screaming as she made the tragic discovery. Pamela had tied the knot with The Hoff in 1989 and they have two daughters together – Taylor, 34, and Hayley, 32.
But their romance hit some bumps in the road and they were divorced in 2006.
Pamela later told how the actor’s previous well-publicised battles with alcohol had a big impact, telling the Mail on Sunday in 2008: “‘Everybody thought (David) was the golden star in swimming trunks on the beach with Pamela Anderson, but the drink was taking over his life. To me, he was the man who fell over on the bedroom floor.”
She added that David was “a good man” and that she had always loved him. “He’s tried desperately hard to get sober,” she said. “But he’s an alcoholic. He has a disease, just like cancer. And just like cancer, it ate away at our family from the inside.”
According to TMZ, family members had not heard from Pamela so went to check on her at home, then discovered her body. Paramedics were called but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
David first met Pamela when she appeared in his show Knight Rider as a guest star, and she also went on to appear in Baywatch.
The actor – who sought treatment and got sober many years ago – released a statement following her death.
“Our family is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Pamela Hasselhoff,” said the 72-year-old. “We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time but we kindly request privacy as we grieve and navigate through this challenging time.”
