Val Kilmer lived a colourful life, before his death was announced at the age of 65, and his dating history included other Hollywood greats, including the likes of Cher and Angelina Jolie
Top Gun and Batman legend Val Kilmer has died at the age of 65.
His daughter Mercedes announced his passing, with his cause of death being pneumonia. Mercedes was one of his two children, the other being his actor son Jack, whom he shared with his only wife Joanne Whalley.
While the actor had a bit of a reputation as being difficult to work with, it seems on a personal level he was a bit of a catch. During his life, while he only married once, he dated a number of high-profile names.
There’s no surprise, then, that he wrote in his 2020 memoir I’m Your Huckleberry: “I’ve always found women infinitely more interesting than men.”
So as Hollywood mourns the great Val Kilmer, Daily Star takes a look back at his dating history.
Cher
Val Kilmer and Cher were together in the 80s, after meeting at the music icon’s birthday party.
Their split seemingly took a toll on Cher, who gushed in 2024 on The Howard Stern Show that she’d been “madly in love” with him. However their age difference came between them.
Believe songstress Cher told People in 2021: “He’s like nobody I’ve ever known.”
She went on: “He was so young. Was he 22? What was I? I don’t know. Thirty-something. It was a bigger deal back then.
“The truth was if I hadn’t gone out with younger men, I would have never had a date. Younger men weren’t intimidated by older women. But older men in my age category, they weren’t having it.”
He also had fond words of Cher, writing: “Once Cher works her way inside your head and heart, she never leaves. For her true friends, her steadfast love and loyalty never die.”
Carly Simon
While Cher was seemingly stuck on Val, Val was all about another ex, Carly Simon.
He and the singer dated after his relationship with Cher came to an end. He wrote in his book: “I wanted to be with Carly every day of the rest of my life.”
However it wasn’t meant to be.
Reminiscing, he said in 2017: “Once Carly Simon awoke me in her guest bedroom with breakfast and an acoustic guitar – played me a new song she’d just written. I wept. An angel…”
Lesley Ann Warren
Val had a brief relationship with Lesley Ann Warren during the 1980s.
Not much is known about their time together, however they were often photographed together.
Lesley went on to marry ad executive Ron Taft in 2000, after they mat at a hair salon in 1991.
Ellen Barkin
Val said in his book that he’d had a “whimsical” romance with actress Ellen Barkin in the 1980s.
He gushed over her “wit”, “sultry eyes” and “laugh”, as well as her hair. He wrote: “Who remembers the softness of a woman’s hair? If you ever have a chance to consensually ever so gently tough Ellen’s hair, it will be worth the look she’s gonna drop on you.”
Joanne Whalley
Val married his Willow co-star Joanne Whalley in 1988. They were also co-stars in 19899 movie Kill Me Again.
Their romance was a whirlwind, and sadly it didn’t last.
They welcomed daughter Mercedes in 1991 and son Jack in 1995. They split shortly after their son was born.
Joanne filed for divorce on July 21, 1995, citing irreconcilable differences.
Their son Jack also went on to become an actor. His first movie role was in the 2013 flick Palo Alto, and he appeared as Ozzy Osbourne in the musician’s Under The Graveyard video.
Cindy Crawford
Not long after his divorce from Joanne, Val was linked to supermodel Cindy Crawford, in 1996. He credited her with helping him find happiness again.
He spoke briefly of their short romance in 2020 on Good Morning America. The actor said: “You have to be committed with a woman that’s as dynamic and as committed to their work as someone like Cindy Crawford, who was the number one model on the planet at the time.”
And it seems he wasn’t.
Jaycee Gossett
After Cindy, Val was linked to producer Jaycee Gossett in the late nineties and early noughties.
Despite things not working out, Val gushed over her in 2018. He shared a throwback photo of them together on Twitter.
He said: “This was my girlfriend Jaycee Gossett and my best friend at the time. My favourite Republican #gordonmiller. For some reason I was often invited to the #WhiteHouse back then. Not so much now. The White House is a very cool place.”
Daryl Hannah
Val dated actress Darly Hannah in 2001 after they worked together on the movie In God We Trust.
And it sounds like for such a short romance, it left a lasting effect on Val. He wrote how devastated he was in his book.
“Lord knows I’ve suffered heartache,” he wrote. “But Daryl was by far the most painful of all.”
He went on to mention Neil Young, who Daryl married in 2018. He said: “Neil Young, I always loved you, but I’m afraid I hate you now.”
Angelina Jolie
Val and Angelina Jolie were linked after working on the 2004 movie Alexander.
He had some very big words for her in her book, after their split. Val wrote: “When people ask me what Angelina is like, I always say she’s like other women and other superstars, but just more.
“More gorgeous. More wise. More tragic. More magic. More grounded.
“Is it worth it? Worth knowing people who require weeks of effort to understand even a little? Yes.”
Paris Hilton
There were claims that Paris Hilton and Val once kissed after meeting on the set of Wonderland. Australian magazine NW published the photographs, which appear to have been scrubbed from the internet now, which showed then 46-year-old Val with 25-year-old Paris in the early 2000s.
Regardless, he had some harsh words for her in 2005. He told Attitude magazine: “It seems like [the notion of celebrity] is more extreme than ever now. If you don’t look a certain way, or you’re not on the front cover all of the time, then you’re no one.
“Paris Hilton is a great example. She’s famous for nothing. It’s what we are celebrating in my country – the nothingness of her fame. She’s fine with it of course – she made $100million last year.”
