Russell Brand charged with rape, indecent assault and sexual assault

Russell Brand has been charged with one count each of rape, indecent assault and oral rape as well as two counts of sexual assault, the Metropolitan Police said.

The comedian and actor, known for his roles in Get Him To The Greek and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, has been charged after an investigation that began in September 2023.

The official Met Police website reported: “The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the Metropolitan Police Service to charge a man following an investigation by detectives.”

“The Met has issued a charge and requisition to Russell Brand, 50 (04.02.1975), of Oxfordshire, in connection with the following offences – one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape, two counts of sexual assault.”

The website reported that detectives “began investigating in September 2023” after they “received a number of allegations” which was followed by reporting by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times.

Russell Brand has previously denied claims made against him.

Met Police announced that Russell will be appearing at Westminster Magistrates Court on 2 May. The report also explained the allegations held against Brand.

“It is alleged that – in 1999 a woman was raped in the Bournemouth area, in 2001 a woman was indecently assaulted in the Westminster area of London, in 2004 a woman was orally raped and sexually assaulted in the Westminster area of London, and between 2004 and 2005 a woman was sexually assaulted in the Westminster area of London.”

Andy Furphy, a detective superintendent from the Metropolitan Police leading the investigation into the comedian, said: “The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers.”

“The Met’s investigation remains open and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case, or anyone who has any information, to come forward and speak with police.”

Brand is best known as a comedian and actor, beginning his career back in the early 2000s. He later became a presenter for MTV in the UK and in 2004 he began hosting Big Brother’s Big Mouth, a spin-off show as part of the iconic reality TV series.

He later moved into acting, appearing in films such as St Trinian’s and Rock Of Ages.
