Pedro Pascal’s future on The Last Of Us confirmed after devastating Joel twist

Pedro Pascal plays the beloved Joel on HBO’s The Last Of Us, but after a harrowing plot twist fans have been left wondering what about the actor’s future in the zombie show

The Last of Us bosses have confirmed Pedro Pascal’s future on the series.

Season two episode two saw one of the show’s most heartbreaking scenes to date as Pedro’s Joel was killed off.

The Infected are seen trying to invade the Jackson settlement as Joel and Dina try to make it home, however Abby is caught in a sticky situation after leaving camp and coming across an army of Infected.

Joel tried to help her as she attempts to escape after getting trapped behind a fence, but after she realises who he is she decides to trap him by saying her friends also need help.

After they all turn on Joel and Dina, it is revealed that Abby is the daughter. of the Firefly surgeon that was killed in season one. For those of you who don’t remember, Joel shot and killed the doctor after he got in the way of saving Ellie.

Abby then shoots Joel in the leg and beats him with a golf club before using the sharp broken end to stab him in the neck, all while Ellie watches helplessly.

In the game, Joel is accompanied by his brother Tommy instead of Dina and Abby’s golf club never breaks. Instead she kills him with one swing to the head – aside from these differences, HBO got the scene pretty spot-on.

Series creator Neil Druckmann told HBO’s After the Episode: ““I think some viewers will start seeing some parallels between Abby and Ellie.”

“Abby has lost her dad, and now, inadvertently, Abby has created those same nightmares for another character. This event will change all the characters we know forever, from this point on.”

“Now this person that’s capable of such violence, this impulsive character, what’s going to happen to them next?”

Fans are hoping they will see much more of Joel despite his death(Image: © 2025 Home Box Office, Inc. All rights reserved. HBO® and all related programs are the property of Home Box Office, Inc.)

The harrowing scene ends with Ellie, Dina and Jesse taking Joel’s body back to camp. His death is one of the most controversial moments in the video game and fans of the show are shocked it has come so early on in the series.

Another five episodes are set to air, meaning many viewers are confused as to where the show will go from here – to make matters even more baffling for fans, The Last of Us has also been confirmed for a third season.

However, even though Joel is now dead the series’ creator has confirmed that this isn’t the last we’ll see of him.

Pedro will reportedly still make an appearance throughout the coming episodes, likely through flashback scenes.

Druckmann said: ““This is where the story starts in earnest, but I will say that we do know there are some mysteries here, some gaps, in Ellie and Joel’s relationships and I think this is a spoiler because we put a trailer out there with lots of shots in it. This is not the last that we will see of Joel.”
