EXCLUSIVE: Harry Potter star James Phelps has shared his take on the upcoming HBO series which has just been cast with a new set of actors who are set to join the wizarding world
Harry Potter star James Phelps has given his verdict on the new upcoming HBO reboot series.
The actor who played Fred Weasley, 39, spoke exclusively to Daily Star as he promoted his new film Jackie the Stripper.
James is playing a priest in the upcoming horror comedy film which is set to be released this Halloween.
The old stars of the movies have been hitting the headlines again recently after the new HBO series announced some key casting news. When asked what he thinks about his role getting re-cast for the TV series, he said: “To be honest, it’s someone else’s journey but I had a such a great time doing those.
“It’s strange to think, but it’s probably stranger for the people watching at home rather than me personally. But whoever is doing it, I wish them the best.”
He added: “The books are so good and JK Rowling did such an amazing job with inspiring multiple generations to read. I know people across the world learned English by reading the books, so I’m open to it.”
When asked if he still gets recognised by fans he said “he does” but feels privileged to give fans even just “30 seconds of my time” and it could “mean the world to someone”.
James said: “I know it means so much to people still and JK Rowling did such an amazing job with inspiring multiple generations to read.”
Potter fans will be thrilled to know there is more than one occasion they will get to see the star on screen later this year, but he will be swapping his wand for a cross in the upcoming movie, Jackie the Stripper.
Talking about how he landed the role, James explained: “It all came about as I’ve worked with Michael about seven or eight years ago. I did a stage show with him and it was one of the most enjoyable gigs I’ve ever done, so I know his writing is really good and he’s such a nice guy.
“He told me about it about a year or so ago, and said ‘do you mind coming down for a day’s work’, I said ‘absolutely’. It’s the opening scene, so at least I’ll be remembered for it! I’ve been working with Jamie Lomas, so that’s been fun.”
The film star also teased that he would be teaming up with his twin and fellow Potter star Oliver, who played George Weasley, back on screen very soon.
He told us: “We will be back together for the second series of Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking on Prime Video, we are in pre-production for that in a couple of weeks, which is exciting. That went down really well apparently all over the world – so I’m looking forward to that again.”
But would he be up for acting alongside his bro once again? “Acting-wise it just depends what comes along, we do love working together, but we are very individual people as well. We do enjoy working together, and if the right thing came along then we would definitely be interested,” he answered.
