Lily Allen apologises to Katy Perry after ripping into Blue Origin space flight

Lily Allen has said sorry to Katy Perry for “being mean” over the singer’s space flight.

Firework singer Katy was recently part of a group of women – which also included Oprah Winfrey’s best friend Gayle King – who travelled to space on Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin craft. The flight sparked a backlash, with people complaining about space tourism, cost and calling it “self-indulgent”.

Lily was one of those to weigh in at the time, but she has now said sorry on her Miss Me? podcast. The singer told listeners that while she disagreed with the trip, there had been “no need” for her to “pile on”.

“I would actually like to apologise for being mean about Katy Perry last week,” Lily said. “There was actually no need for me to bring her name into it, and it was my own internalised misogyny.

“I’ve been thinking about it a lot, and it was just completely unnecessary to pile on with her. I disagree with what it was that they did, but she wasn’t the only person that did it.

“Yet she was possibly the most famous and the one that, you know, it divides people the most, so I don’t know. There was something in me that decided to choose her as the person that should…

“Anyway, I’m just sorry. I would have been hurt if it had been me and someone in my industry used me and my name and I saw that.”

“I’m sorry,” she went on. “I’m sorry Katy Perry. I know you don’t listen to the show but yeah, sorry.”

The flight earlier this month saw Katy and Gayle travel to the edge of space. They were joined by four others – activist Amanda Nguyen, former Nasa rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, film producer Kerianne Flynn and Bezos’s fiancee, Lauren Sánchez.

The trip – the first all female flight since 1963 – lasted just over 10 minutes and it was reported that Katy treated her fellow rocket passengers to a rendition of What A Wonderful World during the journey. When they landed, she was snapped kissing the ground.

The whole thing sparked a huge debate, with many people criticising the flight and those that were on board, and it came up on Lily’s podcast. “I mean, what the… hell was all that about?” she said. “In all seriousness, what? Why? For why?”

The singer suggested that the flight was “out of touch”. “Like, we’re on the brink of like, recession,” said the star. “People are really f****** struggling to make ends meet and get food on their tables.”
