Bake Off star Luis Troyano dies from oesophageal cancer aged 48

The Great British Bake Off finalist Luis Troyano has died.

The baker, who was runner up on the show in 2014, passed away last week from oesophageal cancer.

He was just 48-years-old.

Confirming the news in a statement , his agent Anne Kibel said: “Sadly, my lovely client lost his brave fight against Oesophageal cancer last week.

‘A fantastic man with a love of baking that saw him get to the finals of GBBO, write a wonderful book, Bake It Great and do so much more. Always in our thoughts.’

Oesophageal cancer, which is most common among people in their 60s and 70s, is caused by tumours which are formed in the food pipe connecting the mouth and stomach.

After his stint on Bake Off Luis went on to make an appearance on various BBC cookery shows.

As well as appearing on BBC Good Food he also enjoyed stints on breakfast TV.

Not stopping there, the devoted baker went on to release his own cook book.

Since his passing a Just Giving page has been set up to raise money for Macmillan Support in his memory.

Started by his wife Louise, the project hopes to help fund development in fighting cancer.

Louise wrote on the page: “Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure x

“This page has been set up for Macmillan Cancer Support but in truth, Luis gave a big thank you to everyone involved in his care.

“In Luis’ own words.. A special thank you to Macmillan Cancer Support, East Cheshire Hospice and the NHS including Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Stockport NHS Foundation Trust for trying to save my life and their tireless work to try and eliminate cancer.”

Louise signed off the message: “But more importantly a massive thank you to all the amazing professionals who really did try their absolute best for me, showed me absolute compassion and gave me more time than what was seemingly possible. I thank you sincerely.”

According to Manchester Evening News Luis father passed away from cancer when he was just 16.

He became a patron of Beechwood Cancer Care Centre in hour of him.

Luis said at the time: “I have lived in Stockport all my life and wanted to support a charity that was close to home.

“It feels great to be a patron at Beechwood. There was nothing like Beechwood when I lost my dad and it was a tough time.

“My time on The Great British Bake Off has been life changing and I feel honoured to support Beechwood.”
