Barbara Windsor statue campaign launched by fans to honour late EastEnders icon

Fans of Barbara Windsor have launched a campaign to have a statue erected in her honour.

They blitzed social media with messages calling for a permanent memorial to the Carry On and EastEnders star in the east London district of Shoreditch where she was born and raised.

Dame Barbara died on Thursday, aged 83, after battling Alzheimer’s for six years.

Frustrated at not being able to give her a big send-off due to Covid-19 rules, TV pals Paul O’Grady and Christopher Biggins have called for a memorial service to be held when restrictions are lifted.

Fans want the actress cast in bronze in memory of her glittering 60-year career.

One wrote on Twitter: “A statue of Dame Barbara Windsor in Shoreditch is a must.’’ Another said: “The great Barbara Windsor should have a statue put up in London!’’

While a third wrote: “A statue for Babs. Let’s do this.’’

It was revealed Babs had a £1million nest egg despite not working for three years.

She quit EastEnders as Peggy Mitchell in 2016 and that year made her last film appearance, providing the voice of Dormouse in director Tim Burton’s Alice Through The Looking Glass.

The actress, who starred in nine Carry On movies, made her final screen appearance in 2017 in a cameo role as herself in the BBC’s biopic of her life, Babs. Accounts for her company Sauce E Ltd for 2019 show it still had just under £1m of funds in its coffers.

The books showed that in 2018 and 2017 she paid a total of £167,000 in Corporation Tax.

Barbara had three husbands but no children.

She married nightclub owner Ronnie Knight – who was friends with the Kray twins – in 1964 and they divorced in 1985.

In 1986 she wed Stephen Hollings. They divorced in 1995.

She met third husband Scott in 1992 when she was 55 and he was 28 and married him in 2000.
