Adele Rose, who created the groundbreaking teen soap opera Byker Grove, has died at the age of 87.
The celebrated industry figure was also known for being Coronation Street’s longest serving writer.
Adele was also the soap’s only female writer in the early years.
Rose’s husband Peter Chadwick told Chronicle Live that he his wife had died of pneumonia.
He said: “She developed pneumonia about a week ago and never got over it.
“She passed away in the local hospital, where she had the best care.”
Paying a sweet tribute to his wife, Peter added: “She had a huge sense of humour which was often quite naughty and quite wicked.
“She loved writing the battleaxes in Coronation Street.”
As well as working on Coronation Street between 1961 and 1998, she created the North East’s hugely popular teen soap, Byker Grove.
It came after Adele was approached by TV executive Andrea Wonfor to create a drama about a youth club.
During its 17 years on television, the show won an array of awards and often attracted more than four million viewers.
The show also propelled some of its stars into the spotlight – most famously Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, who went on to become the kings of ITV.
Adele is survived by her son Steve and grandson Daniel.
Adele’s daughter Carrie died a few years ago after contracting sepsis.
Tributes have began to pour in for the talented writer.
One social networker said: “RIP Adele Rose scriptwriter for@itvcorrieand the creator of #ne classic #bykergrove that helped launch the careers of@antanddec.”
While another continued: “Adele sure wrote some iconic scripts.”
