Daniel Craig pays tribute to original James Bond star Sean Connery as he dies

Daniel Craig said Sir Sean Connery had “wit and charm in mega watts” as he pays tribute to the late star.

It was confirmed on Saturday that the Scottish actor has died at the age of 90.

Sir Sean was best known for his portrayal of James Bond, being the first to bring the role to the big screen and appearing in seven of the spy thrillers.

According to the BBC, Connery died overnight in his sleep while in the Bahamas after being unwell for some time.

He landed his first role as 007 in 1962’s Dr. No, which propelled him to international stardom.

In a statement, the Casino Royale star said: “It is with such sadness that I heard of the passing of one of the true greats of cinema.

“Sir Sean Connery will be remembered as Bond and so much more.

“He defined an era and a style. The wit and charm he portrayed on screen could be measured in mega watts; he helped create the modern blockbuster.

“He was and shall always be remembered as the original James Bond whose indelible entrance into cinema history began when he announced those unforgettable words – ‘The name’s Bond… James Bond’ – he revolutionised the world with his gritty and witty portrayal of the sexy and charismatic secret agent.

“He is undoubtedly largely responsible for the success of the film series and we shall be forever grateful to him.”

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: “My thoughts and condolences are with Micheline, their children and all the family. RIP Sir Sean Connery.”

Connery was married to Diane Cilento in 1962 before they divorced in 1973, though they separated in 1971.

The former couple had a son Jason Connery, who is also an actor.

Connery then married the Moroccan-French painter Micheline Roquebrune in 1975.

He won an Oscar in 1988 after being named as the best supporting actor for his role in The Untouchables.

He was knighted in 2000 by the Queen at Holyrood Palace.
