Dua Lipa breaks down in tears in emotional Attitude Awards appearance

Dua Lipa broke down in tears during the 2020 Attitude Awards, which were powered by Jaguar, after collecting the 2020 Attitude Music Award.

The Fever songstress wiped away tears as she spoke about the troubles the LGBTQ community has faced.

Dua, who was recently nominated for a string of Grammy Awards thanks to her latest album Future Nostalgia, said: “If you have enjoyed my music then that is the best honour of all.

“I am so grateful. 2020 has been such a surreal year.

“I had literally the best time performing at Mardi Gras in Sydney at the start of the year.

“It is crazy to think we were all celebrating together and then suddenly it was like someone pulled the plug.

“Those first few weeks when Covid really took hold were so confusing and it was such a difficult decision to put out music during a pandemic but I decided I would as I hoped this record would make people happy and provide some light in a dark time.

“God knows we needed that.”

The chart-topper continued: “2020 has been a year of devastation and loss and one of learning.

“A lot of my LBGTQ friends have talked to me about what a vulnerable time this was for them and how they relied on the support of their friends to get them through which was particularly important if they don’t feel like didn’t have the support at home.

“For so many Covid has separated them from the support…

“The mental health implications don’t bear thinking about. For many the loss of hanging out with their friends and their second families and losing their safe spaces, it will have been catastrophic but we are learning to navigate the Covid crisis.”

With her eyes welling up, the star went on to warn that a mental health crisis could sweep the UK if we are not careful or prepared.

“Many organisations have reported that since the pandemic began the number of LGBTQ people contacting them has doubled.

“Tragically some are reporting an increase in suicides so I am urging all of us, if there is someone you think is vulnerable, someone you think could do with a hug, even if it’s virtual please don’t wait for them to reach out to you…. “

Dua’s voice then trailed off as she halted her speech and wiped away tears.

After apologising, the starlet went on to offer one final message of love and unity.

She said: “Let’s wrap our arms around the young people in the community and help them to feel safe, heard and loved.

“Let’s get through this together.”
