Kate Garraway opens up on 'tough' Halloween as Derek remains in hospital

Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway has opened up about her “tough day” at home with her two young children as her husband Derek Draper remains in hospital.

The 53-year-old has taken to her official Instagram page to update her adoring fans on her day after Derek, also 53, mouthed his first words on Friday.

Former Labour lobbyist Derek is Britain’s longest-suffering coronavirus patient, having been hospitalised for the past 215 days.

The former I’m A Celebrity star admitted her two children Darcey, 14 and 11-year-old Billy her her through the day.

Kate recently revealed Derek spoke for the first time after his tracheotomy tube was removed as he is now able to breathe without a ventilator.

The ITV host revealed she watched Derek mouthed the word “pain” via a video.

In view of her 952,000 Instagram followers, Kate decided to update her following on how she is doing since Derek’s breakthrough.

She shared a video of herself giving a sneak peek of their decorated house for Halloween.

“Tough day as Derek loves #halloween – but the kids have encouraged me to get some of his favourite spooky kit out to celebrate him and feel better for it,” she said.

“Happy #halloween everyone.”

The video began with a speaking mirror which blurted out “Happy Halloween”.

Fans saw a variety of decorations, including a witch, a skull head and several pumpkins dotted around the room.

It wasn’t long before Kate received many kind messages, including a supportive comment from her GMB co-presenter Susanna Reid, 49.

“Wow – you are amazing,” she wrote, which was followed up by Nadine Coyle.

She penned: “Thinking of you Kate!!!” with a series of love heart emojis.

One fan also weighed in, adding: “You have done Derek proud with your Halloween display. I’m sure when is better he will be chuffed you did it.”

Another commented: “Well done Kate sending love and best wishes to you and your family xxx.”

It comes just a day after Kate revealed Derek uttered his first words as the doctors had shifted him.

She said: “But suddenly he mouthed in a whisper, ‘Pain’.

“Obviously it’s so heart-wrenching that his first word was ‘pain’, but it is a huge breakthrough because it means he has been able to connect the feeling in his body to his brain and mouth.”

The mother of two “burst into tears” after seeing her other half’s sudden communication, which she wasn’t expecting.

Kate told The Sun: “It breaks my heart that there may have been times that he’s been in terrible pain and wasn’t able to communicate it.

“But he’s said it twice now and I was there for the second one, watching him over FaceTime.”
