Most explosive moments at the NME Awards: Blood, Liam Gallagher brawls and C-bombs

Musical greats are set to gather in London for the NME Awards tonight and there’s no doubt the ceremony will throw up a number of talked-about incidents.

To get everyone in the mood for some rowdy rock ‘n roll behaviour, we’ve compiled quite the list of the most explosive moments that have happened at the knees-up over the years.

From Bring Me The Horizon’s frontman Ollie Sykes gatecrashing Coldplay’s table to boxing legend Mike Tyson walloping Killers’ singer Brandon Flowers, the NME Awards are far from understated.

We look back at some of the most talked-about moments from the bash.

1. Ryan Jarman’s near-fatal incident

The Cribs’ frontman Ryan Jarman got a little trigger happy when he decided to launch himself onto Kaiser Chiefs’ table – and nearly bled to death. In the heat of the moment, as he got carried away, he hadn’t realised the mountain or glassware or Prosecco laying about.

Shocked guests looked on as poor Ryan suffered horrible wounds and was quickly rushed to hospital and stitched up. Full of determination, he discharged himself so he could hot foot it to the after-party hours later.

And there he came unstuck again when his dancing was soon interrupted as he started bleeding again and found himself back in A&E. Good effort.

2.Oli Sykes jumps on Coldplay’s table

In an unexpected move, Bring Me The Horizon’s frontman Oli Skyes decided to spice up his 2016 performance.

Not content with performing on stage, he made a beeline for the seating area and picked Coldplay’s table to conquer. And boy did he conquer, by leaping right on top of it.

However, his antics seemed to go down well with frontman Chris Martin who happily kicked back and looked amused.

3. Liam Gallagher squares up to Idris Elba

Following the 2013 gathering, Liam Gallagher mocked Idris Elba at the after-party but his quick quips landed himself in a spot of bother.

Prior to the tussle, the pair had attended the NME Awards at London’s Troxy, before heading to the Ivy Club.

The former Oasis frontman made a number of swipes about the actor’s headwear – a snazzy bobble hat – which ended in them being “toe-to-toe at one point”.

4. Russell Brand slags off Bob Geldof with C-bomb

Bob Geldof faced the wrath of outspoken Russell Brand when the comedian-turned-guru called him “Sir Bobby Gandalf” when the political activist collected the Best Music DVD for Live 8.

Not impressed with Russell’s remark, the Irish singer-songwriter responded: “Russell Brand, what a c**t.”

The slanging match was far from over as the Get Him to the Greek star returned to the stage and exclaimed: “Really, it’s no surprise that he’s such an expert on famine. He has been dining out on ‘I Don’t Like Mondays’ for 30 years.”

5.Mike Tyson hits Brandon Flowers

When The Killers couldn’t attend the ceremony one year, they decided to get creative with their video.

Forgoing the usual absence patter, the American band sent in a VT of themselves inside a barber’s shop with boxing legend Mike Tyson.

In a weird twist, the burly sportsman lamped singer Brandon Flowers in the face during his emotive speech. All in jest, obviously.

6. The Libertines turn to poetry

2004 saw The Libertines bag their Best Band award – but went off-piste with their acceptance speech.

Elated with their big win, Pete Doherty and Carl Barat swapped thank yous by reading the poem ‘Suicide In The Trenches’.

Cheery…

7.We Are Scientists ripping into everyone

Ahead of the 2008 event, We Are Scientists decided to take the mickey out of a variety of musical acts.

Annoying every Tom, Dick and Harry, they mixed up Kelly Osbourne with Kate Nash and introduced Dev Hynes – who was performing as Lightspeed Champion at the time – as ‘Devendra Banhart also known as Buzz Lightyear’.

8. Kate Moss and Pete Doherty booted out for handsy incident

Kate Moss and Peter Doherty couldn’t keep their hands off each other during the 2007 Awards, leading them to be escorted out of Hammersmith Palais.

Following an alleged “alleyway” incident, the couple were asked to leave the ceremony by security.

According to a source, they were spotted heading into the venue’s toilets together and were later caught in a clinch in an alleyway at the back of the West London building.

9. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s sound of silence

2003 saw one of the most awkward encounters in NME award show history.

The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club were honoured with Best Video, and instead of a regular speech, dummer Nick Jago stood in silence for not one… but seven very very long minutes on stage.

10. Foo Fighters don’t stop

In 2011, the Foo Fighters bagged the Godlike Genius award, and like all recipients of the accolade the band performed at the end of the ceremony.

However, their set lasted two-hours comprising 23 songs from their back catalogue, including a complete run-through of their then-new album.

Hardly a complaint, mind.
