Phillip Schofield admitted his dad was “disappointed” he showed no interest in football during Tuesday’s instalment of This Morning.
The 58-year-old presenter, along with his co-star Holly Willoughby, interviewed legendary author Jilly Cooper on the show, discussing her new book.
During the chat, Jilly, 83, revealed she is writing a book in which the lead character manages a football team, leading to a good deal of footie research.
However, Phil admitted he was clueless when it came to kickabouts, despite his dad’s encouragement throughout his childhood.
Phil revealed his dad Brian, who tragically died in 2008, was a celebrated footballer, recalling reading newspaper headlines praising his prowess on the footie pitch.

However, Phil didn’t inherit his love of the sport, as he said: “It was always a great disappointment to my father, who was a great player.”
He added: “Both my brother and I were both enormous disappointments to him.”
Phil has occasionally spoken about his beloved dad on the show in the past, growing emotional about his passing during a 2014 segment on grief.
Opening up about his death and the impact it had on his family, he said: “My dad died in 2008, he’d been poorly for a long time.

“We knew it was going to happen, but when it finally did happen we heard from the hospital, who said it’s incredible how many people and it is this extraordinary physical thing that a person who is near the end of their life who without even knowing maybe, waits until family have left the room and then they go quietly on their own.
“And if I hadn’t caught him, if I hadn’t been there at the right time, he’d have gone without us.”
He added: “And that’s tough you know, that’s tough, he tried to sneak away, but we caught him.”
At the time, Phil then offered to support to a caller who was battling with their own bereavement, letting them know he still struggled to talk about it.
He added: “You can’t blame yourself, you know it’s funny I still, obviously, find it tough to talk after all these years.”
This Morning airs on weekdays at 10am on ITV.
