Ricky Gervais likes tweets slamming Frankie Boyle's criticism of his trans jokes

A row between Frankie Boyle and fellow comedian Ricky Gervais has heated up.

The Mock The Week panelist told on Grounded With Louis Theroux podcast this week he believes Ricky’s jokes about transgender people are disrespectful.

Chatting to the documentary maker, Boyle said: “If you’re a stand-up watching him, you feel like, ‘oh, that’s someone doing a version of what we do’.”

“But really, it’s that I saw him doing his routine about trans people and I thought it was very lazy.

“I would like him to have the same respect for trans people as he seems to have for animals. I don’t think that’s a lot to ask.”

Following Frankie’s comments, many fans of Gervais took to Twitter to slam the funnyman- and while Ricky remained silent he gave his approval by liking the posts.

In one of the posts an angry fan wrote: “Clicked on Frankie Boyle trending (for having a pop at Ricky Gervais). Boy, a lot of people really hate him on here. He was great fun about 15 years ago, but since he went woke and sanctimonious to save his career, he became unwatchable cringe TV. Shame, he used to be funny.”

Another person said: “Frankie Boyle has gone from someone telling the most malicious, ‘problematic’ jokes imaginable to a tiresome wokelord. A cynical person might advise you to set your watch for the inevitable personal scandal.”

A third added: “@frankieboyle is using Ricky Gervais to keep his flailing woke ‘comedy career’ in the limelight.”

“#FrankieBoyle telling @rickygervais to be more respectful is the perfect end to 2020 , what a melt haha”, a fourth person added.

Trans newsreader India Willoughby also defended Ricky in a Twitter post.

India, who is a regular guest on ITV’s Good Morning Britain wrote: “Whenever I’m picking up my fetish gear from the local dry cleaners, Ricky always say hello. Same if we bump into each other in the woods. Love your trans stuff Ricky – some folk have no sense of humour!”.

When he was presenting the Golden Globes in 2016, Ricky made a joke about retired Olympian Caitlyn Jenner, who transitioned in 2015.

Ricky took aim at Caitlyn and the car accident she was involved in just a year prior to the event, which killed animal rights activist Kim Howe.

He said: “She didn’t do a lot for women drivers but you can’t have everything, can you? Not at the same time.”

Gervais, 59, said: “What a year she’s had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere – showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes.”

During his 2018 Netflix hit Humanity, he also used Caitlyn’s previous name.
