Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes recall 'disastrous' first date on This Morning

This Morning stars Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford have opened up about their disastrous first date.

The husband and wife, both 60, were back on our screens on Friday to present the latest edition of the ITV daytime show.

Eamonn and Ruth chatted to couple Emma and Alec at the beginning of the show about their budding romance.

The lovebirds from Preston spoke to the presenters about their dramatic second date which ended with a cliffside rescue.

Before they chatted to the couple, Eamonn and Ruth reminisced about their first date.

Eamonn asked his wife: “Do you remember our first date?”

“Our first date was to the cinema,” Ruth informed viewers.

The Irish broadcaster replied: “Was it?”

“Can’t you remember?,” Loose Women host Ruth hit back.

“I was going to pay for the tickets but when I went to the cashpoint and it went ‘err-err’,” she laughed.

“I was so embarrassed, and I said ‘I don’t know why that’s happened’, I dropped my bag and everything fell out.”

She continued: “You rescued me and paid for the tickets and I thought ‘he’s the one for me’.”

Eamonn and Ruth began dating in 1997 after his split from his first wife Gabriele Holmes, with whom he has three children, Declan, Rebecca and Niall.

The couple kept their relationship a secret and Ruth gave birth to their son Jack in 2002.

Eamonn and Ruth tied the knot in 2010 at Elvetham Hall, near Hampshire.

The presenters have reportedly been dropped from the Friday slot on This Morning.

Ruth and Eamonn currently host the Friday edition on This Morning but they were told they were being axed from the ITV daytime show a month ago, reports The Sun.

With speculation running high as to who will fill their boots on the show, it has been suggested that their role will be handed over to former Big Brother contestant Alison Hammond, 45, and X Factor host Dermot O’Leary, 47.

In spite of the rumour mill running into overdrive, ITV have since shut down on-going speculation that Eammon and Ruth are leaving the programme.

A spokesperson for This Morning said: “We have a stellar presenting line up on This Morning in Holly and Phillip and Eamonn and Ruth.

“Any additions to this line up will be announced in due course.”

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10am
